#HEALTH: Selfies+Celebrities Spark Rise In Facial Plastic Surgery!

It’s pretty apparent that we live in a selfie-obssessed culture, and a new report suggests a lot of people are getting work done because of it.

According to a new report by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS):

  • Compared to 2018, facial plastic surgery procedures grew 6% last year.
  • Non-surgical procedures were up 13% last year.
  • 85% of procedures performed by AAFPRS members were minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures.
  • Among the most popular procedures:
    • Skin treatments (up 39%)
    • Fillers (up 13%)
    • Neorotoxins/Botox (up 12%)

And social media can definitely be credited with the rise in these procedures.

  • In fact, 72% of doctors say patients are having procedures to look better in selfies, a 15% increase from 2018.
  • What’s more, there was an 11% increase in people seeking procedures because they were unhappy with their profile images.

Celebrities are also a big reason folks seek to better their look.

  • 84% of AAFPRS members say celebrities play a role in patients’ desire for procedures, up 6% from 2018.
  • There’s also been a 4% increase in patients requesting a procedure because a celeb had it done.
  • As for the celebs that most influence procedures, it shouldn’t be too shocking that Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian are the biggest influences for women, while Brad Pitt and Bradley Cooper are tops for men.
