And now... a #TobyThought for this morning...

Good morning! Thanks for choosing to #ReadThisFirst...

It's day three of the thermostat war at my house... the conflict almost took a turn last night. After a long day, which culminated with dinner with a colleague who is in town, I returned home after an exhausting day of three meetings, two appointments and and an accelerated afternoon, with no nap... and was looking forward to handing a few evening things before crashing. From the time I penned this note to you yesterday, til about 8pm, I had not been home at all, so I wasn't aware of the climate in the house.

Kyla, however, had been home for a bit in the evening while I was at dinner. And, as is her way when she's hot, she cranked the AC.

The temperature it was set for?

45 degrees.

I walked into the front door and instantly knew what was going on. As I listened to the whir of the fan and the AC, I said, "feeling warm, I guess..."

"Yeah, so I turned it on but it hasn't been that long."

It was frosty.

Rather than get mad at the moment, I went about some business. Did some chores, watched some news and then made my way to bed as she finished her homework. On the way to my room, I flipped the switch on the HVAC to off... and this morning, it's still off, and I woke up to 67 degrees. Not where I'd like it to be... but closer than usual.

Crisis averted... until I see the power bill for the AC being on BLAST set at 45 degrees.

And so the saga continues.

SIDE NOTE - today is day two of me waking up to the fragrance of some sort of sativa substance which isn't the fragrance of someone cooking with OREGANO. I'm not sure which of my neighbors it is, but one of 'em must have received a medicinal card - or they just got a phat stash of some green stuff from someone - because WOAH.

Now I want some more waffles.

Let's get into the day... with this video of a dude passing out while riding a roller-coaster... because having friends make fun of you while you pass out on a roller-coaster... is strangely funny... especially when it goes viral!

And then... there's this SEAGULL barking like a dog... because... WHY??????

Now... the soon-to-be-world-famous COPY AND PASTE ROUNDUP OF THINGS!

TODAY IS:

  • Beer Can Appreciation Day: A good day to have a can of beer.
  • National Compliment Day: A good day to give someone a compliment.

What is the worst trait a co-worker can have? According to a new survey, the answer is having a negative personality. 28 percent of respondents said that was the worst quality in a co-worker. That was followed by poor work ethic (26%), being entitled or arrogant (19%), taking credit for other people’s work (17%) and being disorganized and late (11%). (The Ladders)

Speaking of work … Seems lots of people want out of the job they have. New data from Google Trends reveals that the most-Googled jobs question of 2018 was: “How to quit a job.” (Market Watch

Gender reveal lasagna … Forget cake icing and balloons ... Now, thanks to Italian chain restaurant Villa Italian Kitchen, you can host your own gender reveal lasagna party. No joke. Each special order lasagna comes with either a baby pink or baby blue secret filling that makes the lasagna look a little less than appetizing. But for parents with a sense of humor and hopefully more food options at the party, it’s certainly an entertainingly cheesy way to celebrate the joyous occasion. (Today

FREE WINGS IF THE SUPER BOWL GOES INTO OVERTIME

Last weekend, both Conference Championship games in the NFL went into overtime.

Well, now’s the time to start rooting for the Super Bowl to go into overtime -- as it could mean free wings for everyone.

Buffalo Wild Wings has announced that they’ll be treating America to a free order of snack-sized wings on February 18th if the Patriots and the Rams need overtime to settle things. (For The Win)

AMERICANS SPENT $43 BILLION ON VIDEO GAMES LAST YEAR

According to gaming industry insiders, Americans spent $43 billion on video games in 2018, up a whopping 18 percent from 2017.

Fortnite alone raked in $2.4 billion. (Complex)

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER THE BEST WAY TO DRINK CRAFT BEER

Most beer drinkers would agree that craft beer is more “special” than the mass produced stuff.

With this in mind, German scientists tried to figure out how to drink it -- and get the best taste.

They found that it’s important to store craft beer in a cool place and drink it within three months. Anything beyond three months, it starts to lose its aroma and flavor. (Ars Technica)

CAN'T PUT A GOOD PUP DOWN

A shelter dog named Rudolph is being called a "miracle puppy" after he survived euthanasia and ultimately ended up in a loving forever home.

The Labrador retriever-pit bull mix became the odd dog out in a crowded kill shelter in Oklahoma and a decision was made to put him down.

The vet administered the first round of euthanasia drugs, but Rudolph somehow survived it. The vet then refused to administer the second round and arranged to have Rudolph sent to a no-kill shelter in Iowa instead.

A few days after he arrived, a man stopped by and immediately hit it off with Rudolph. He adopted him and gave him the happy ending he came so close to not having. (WTVD-TV

PASSENGER SAVES WOMAN WHO FELL ONTO SUBWAY TRACKS

In Philadelphia, the quick reaction of a subway passenger saved the life of a woman who fell off a platform and onto the tracks.

31-year-old Ben Runyan was on the platform when he heard the woman fall. When he realized that she was on the tracks and in harm’s way he jumped off the platform and assisted in getting her away from the tracks – and away from an oncoming train.

Watching the rescue unfold, other passengers sprung into action and pulled both Ben and the woman to safety.

And while the woman was taken to the hospital, she suffered only minor injuries – and Ben only had to deal with scrapes on his shin.

He admits there was a surge of adrenaline, but after the experience was over, he was able to hop on the next train and back to his business. (Philadelphia Inquirer

STUDENTS LEAVE OUT HATS AND SCARVES FOR THE NEEDY

Grade school students in Torrington, Connecticut, have been making an impact on their community by leaving out bright yellow scarves and hats for the homeless and needy in the area to take.

The students posted a sign, inviting people to take the clothing, and also wrote some messages to those they are helping with these gifts.

Members of the school student council explained that the charity campaign is a good way to teach and learn empathy for those around them. And, they’re pleased to announce that plenty of people have been taking the items and putting them to good use. (USA Today)
