Ellie Goulding Teases “Saddest Song” Ever, Performs Live: Watch

After taking a break from music, Ellie Goulding is back with hit new track “Close to Me” featuring Diplo and Swae Lee. The British songstress stopped by On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Friday, November 16, and revealed that she’s ready to drop her fourth studio album, and that it features one of her favorite — and “saddest” — songs she’s ever written.

“The song that I’d love to release sometime soon is probably the saddest song I’ve ever written in my life,” Goulding dished to Seacrest. “And people already say ‘I cry listening to certain songs’ … and I’m like, ‘Oh God, what’s going to happen with this one then?’ Because this is like sad, sad.”

Goulding, whose last album Delirium came out in 2015, explained that she oddly ends up recording these tear-jerker songs while in a happy place.

“It’s weird because I was in a happy place when I was writing, but sometimes when I’m really pumped, I’m like 'Let’s write the saddest song ever,'” she added, teasing the song is relatable. “It’s about something that’s happened in my life and something I wanted to write, get out there and then let it rest. … It’s about when humans — there’s that one person for whatever reason — who has stayed with you and you don't know why.”

After performing a perfect acoustic rendition of “Close to Me,” Goulding confirmed that yes, more new singles are to come before the official album drop.

“I think the next song will be in January,” she revealed. “It’s so unpredictable. I could release the album now, but I’m kind of just waiting a second. I feel ready to come back because I feel like I’ve been away.”

Yes, yes and more yes!
