Some kids in central Florida were treated to a special surprise by police over the weekend. Officers with the Orlando Police Department donned Santa hats to deliver gifts donated by the department to more than 200 children in need.
The department gets the names of kids in need from local churches, counselors and community centers, then works to make their Christmas wishes come true. Officers and staff donate money to buy the toys and gifts, which are usually given out at holiday parties. But this year, those events are canceled, so the officers made special visits to the kids at home.
Officer Marcus Hyatt says the gift-giving helps build trust with the community and helps “close the gap because so often law enforcement is portrayed in a certain way. He says the kids’ reaction was nothing but positive, adding, “We’ve seen nothing but smiles.”
