Scientists Help Paralyzed Man's Brain Waves Turn Into Sentences On Computer

Here's today's feel-good story:

UC San Francisco researchers have developed a "speech neuroprosthesis" to help a man with severe paralysis to communicate in sentences that translate signals from his brain to the vocal tract that will put words onto a screen.

UCSF neurosurgeon Edward Chang has been working on this technology for more than a decade.

“To our knowledge, this is the first successful demonstration of direct decoding of full words from the brain activity of someone who is paralyzed and cannot speak,” said Chang. “It shows strong promise to restore communication by tapping into the brain’s natural speech machinery.”
