President Donald Trump's speech to the Knesset, Israel's unicameral legislature, was briefly interrupted by far-left politician Ofer Cassif, who was immediately escorted out of the chamber, on Monday (October 13), the New York Post reports.
Cassif, who has represented Hadash in the Knesset since April 2019, began shouting while Trump praised his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, for bringing "peace in the Middle East," though it wasn't immediately clear what he was yelling. The chamber reportedly cheered as Cassif was expelled.
Another Knesset member was also removed by security during the assembly. Trump declared that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas brought the "end of an age of terror and death" and the "historic dawn of a new Middle East" during his speech.
āThis is the end of an age of terror and death and the beginning of the age of faith and hope and of God,ā he said. āItās the start of a grand concord and lasting harmony for Israel and all the nations of what will soon be a truly magnificent region. I believe that so strongly, this is the historic dawn of a new Middle East.ā
Trump also acknowledged the return of all 20 remaining Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity on Monday. An initial group of seven hostages returned to Israel, while the remaining 13 were reported to be on their way, after all were released in Gaza, NBC News reported.
āAfter two harrowing years and darkness and captivity, 20 courageous hostages are returning to the glorious embrace of their families, and it is glorious,ā Trump said via the New York Post. āTwenty-eight more precious loved ones are coming home at last to rest in this sacred soil for all of time and after so many years of unceasing war and endless danger, today, the skies are calm, the guns are silent, the sirens are still.ā
