Two Delta jets collided into each other while taxiing on the runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York City Wednesday (October 1) night, CBS News reports.
The "low-speed collision" took place when Endeavor Air Flight 5155, a plane departing for Roanoke, Virginia, that was carrying 28 passengers and four crewmembers, suddenly crashed into an arriving Endeavor Air Flight 5047, a plane arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina, which was carrying 57 passengers and four crew members. Delta confirmed that the wing of Flight 5155 collided with the fuselage of Flight 5047, which resulted in one flight attendant sustaining a minor injury and receiving treatment from EMTs at the scene.
The Port Authority confirmed that the individual was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for the injury. CBS News producer Joey Annunziato was aboard Flight 5047 at the time of the crash and recorded a video of the other plane's damaged wing, which included a pilot overheard saying, "it seems as though there's an aircraft that collided with us" over the intercom.
"It was a pretty violent collision. At the time, we didn't really know like kind of what we hit." Annunziato said. "But it almost, what it sounded like was like a sardine can kind of opening. Like it was like something was being sheared off and, lo and behold, we looked at the right side of the plane, and the wing looked like it was almost like off the plane."
The cause of the collision has not yet been determined as of Thursday (October 2) morning.
"There was no impact to airport operations," the Port Authority confirmed.
Passengers were escorted off the planes and onto waiting shuttle buses, while Delta said it provided hotel rooms and booked new flights for any passengers who needed them following the crash.
"Delta teams at our New York-LaGuardia hub are working to ensure our customers are taken care of after two Delta Connection aircraft operated by Endeavor Air were involved in a low-speed collision during taxi," the airline said in a statement obtained by CBS News. "Delta will work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else. We apologize to our customers for the experience."
